Medical Evaluation with Physician Oversight |
Managed Medical Care of Alcohol Withdrawal Symptoms
|
 |
Alcohol detoxification is a confidential program designed to manage the symptoms of alcohol withdrawals.
Upon entering the alcohol treatment program all clients are required to undergo an in-depth physical examination.
Physician oversight is necessary for any person physically dependent to alcohol.
The physician evaluation is part and parcel of the overall alcohol treatment plan which is designed to place client safety first while ensuring the highest rate of success.
Physician oversight includes several components; medical evaluation, medication safety protocols, alcoholism treatment planning, anti-diarrhea treatment, vitamin supplementation, hydration therapy and sleep treatment. | |
|
The physician’s examination includes but is not limited to:
- A thorough history of a patient’s drinking patterns (amount and how long)
- Medical evaluation for signs of alcohol withdrawal symptoms (diarrhea, DT’s, alcoholic hallucinosis, shakes, high blood pressure, tachycardia, sweats, etc…)
- Complete review of systems
- Medical evaluation for signs of chronic alcohol misuse (liver palpation, palmar erythema, acne rosacea, unexplained bruises, periods of anterograde amnesia i.e. alcoholic blackouts, testicular atrophy, gynecomastia, duputryen’s contractures)
- Medical evaluation for signs of peripheral vascular disease
|
Once a patient is cleared by their physician, medications may be prescribed to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms such as; diarrhea, hypertension, tachycardia, seizures and DT’s.
Physician follow-up is often necessary to reevaluate their patient’s medical condition and adjust prescribed medications.
Physician oversight is the most pragmatic approach in managing alcohol withdrawal symptoms and physician oversight may mean the difference between a successful alcohol detox program and an unsuccessful detox program.
