Alcohol Blackouts: “Lose Your Car Lately?”

Alcohol induced blackout is a form of anterograde amnesia caused by drinking too much alcohol. Alcohol consumption causes the hippocampus part of the brain to function improperly. As Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) increases the hippocampus will eventually lose its ability to form new memories.

Alcohol Blackout is not forgetting what happened it is the brain’s hippocampus being disrupted to the point where it stopped registering and storing new data. The relationship to Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) and Alcohol Induced Anterograde Amnesia (AIAA) is clear. The faster you drink, the amount you drink, what you drink and how long you drink will affect the probability of experiencing an alcohol blackout (anterograde amnesia).

A strange phenomenon of alcohol blackouts is that a person cannot comprehend an alcohol blackout until they come out of a blackout.
