Huntington Beach was incorporated in 1909. It is now the 16th largest city in California. Home to approximately 200,000 inhabitants, Huntington Beach falls within the combined Los Angeles metropolitan area, which has a population of about 17 million. The city is located on the Pacific Ocean in Southern California, 38 miles southeast of Los Angeles. Huntington Beach is a seaside city in Orange County in southern California. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 189,594. It is bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west, by Seal Beach on the north, by Costa Mesa on the south, by Westminster on the northeast, and by Fountain Valley on the east. Huntington Beach is located on a mesa beside the Pacific Ocean within view of the Santa Ana River. Before the Spaniards arrived, the Gabrielino Indians maintained a large camp and burial ground on this mesa. From 1901 to 1904, real estate developers, trying to create an ocean side resort, invested heavily in rail, electricity, and telephone infrastructure. For The Huntington Beach Company, the resort failed to take off. However their fortunes were reversed with the exploitation of an oil reserve below their land. From 1919 through the 1950's the oil business thrived.

As of the census of 2000, there were 189,594 people, 73,657 households, and 47,729 families residing in the city. The racial makeup of the city was 79.22% White, 0.81% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 9.34% Asian, 0.24% Pacific Islander, 5.81% from other races, and 3.94% from two or more races. 14.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 73,657 households out of which 29.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 9.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.08.

n the city the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 24.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 100.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.6 males.

The climate is generally sunny, dry and cool, although evenings can be excessively damp. In the morning and evening, there are often strong breezes, 15 mph (25 km/h). Ocean water temperatures average 55 to 65 °F (10 to 15 °C). In the summer, temperatures rarely exceed 85 °F (25 °C). In the winter, temperatures rarely fall below 40 °F (4 °C), even on clear nights. There are about 10 inches (250 mm) of rain, almost all in mid-winter. Frost occurs only rarely on the coldest winter nights. Huntington Beach falls within Orange County, which in 2004 was named one of the "Top 25 Cities for Doing Business in America" by Inc. Magazine in the Large Cities category.
